Milano Bikesexual Art

It is difficult to put into words all the organization and bikelove made possible by the volunteers in Milano. But they tried.

"The films are spectacular, but they are just the pretext for what is possible. The best thing about Bike Smut is our community making time to explore sexuality and mobility... it can produce some pretty wild ideas." ~ Cauz, Milano organizer

With so much great art being made we decided we had to share it.

Filmmaker Focus #7 The Bitchy Tutorial

Hi again faithful and curious bikesexuals! Today we have a special treat for you. We continue the Filmmaker Focus series with our highly produced film series from Milan, Italy: The Bitchy Tutorial Series!

These movies have been among the most loved and hated films we have ever shown. They offer a glimpse into another culture as well as what is possible when a group of people work together to produce something very polished. Regardless of what you thought about the films you should read what the creators of Italy's first ever submission to Bike Smut have to say about sex, cycling and making movies.

Do you have a back story? An introduction to who you are?

Officine Sfera is a group of 4 friends who came together because of their passion for classic Italian racing bikes. We started to have a few too many bikes in Daniele's parents garage so we decided to find ourselves a space that could act both as workshop where we could restore our bikes and a studio where we could continue to carry out our other personal professions. Being graphic designers, illustrators, industrial designers, video producers, event organizers and avid internet fans we like to create projects together that are related to bicycles and showcase our various skills and passions.

Do you like flimmaking?  Why? Have you made movies before? What were they like? why you make the movies you do?

Gash Rouge both as a collective and as individuals have worked and continue to work in video. They produce everything from fashion promo videos to music videos to TV shows. Jessica from Officine Sfera did some video production for Vice Italy and Pietro (also OS) is just a wiz kid that can pretty much do everything and has done everything relating to technology and design.

how you came to shoot for Bike Smut and what you hope people will gain from watching your movie?

We got together as friends to make these tutorials. As a bike workshop we wanted to make something that we could use to gain some visibility and our friends/girlfriends are part of an all girl video collective called Gash Rouge, so we decided to team up. We attended The Bike Smut festival when you came to Milan and Jessica even attempted to be your translator, but was a little to embarrassed (her italian has greatly improved, when you come back we'll do it proper). We all loved the festival and after seeing the bike tutorials out there on the web we decided to merge the two ideas. One of the things that annoyed us about some of these videos is that the girls were simply sexualized and never actually doing anything constructive or real with the bikes they seemed to be so aroused by.  We also took into consideration the tutorials that you see on youtube, which are usually a dude in his low-light garage with the camera on the floor. Talking it over we came up with the idea of making these short tutorials that were dynamic, detailed and a little easier on the eye.

Tell us about your movie. How did you decide to set up these sets? How did you decide which maintenance to demonstrate?

The girls from Gash Rouge came up with the concept for the set, they really liked the idea of filming everything 360 degrees, in order to create a tutorial that shows you each step from the best angle (that and some great ass shots).
As for which type of maintenance we decided to demonstrate, we had to pick something that was universally useful, not too many steps because we wanted to create very short videos, and easy enough for us to teach the models the day of the shoot.

What was it like filming in the studio?

It was great fun, we only had access to the studio for a day so we had to be really organized and do everything in the shortest time possible. Except Studio was nice enough to lend us the space and some equipment as well so we were very fortunate, but boy did it get steamy in there (the lights were really hot).

How did you find people to help you make this movie?

Everyone involved in this movie was somebody's friend, girlfriend, boyfriend, sister or colleague. We were very lucky to have so many amazing and talented friends who shared our vision and were willing to pool their skills to make these tutorials.

What are the origins of the clothes?

Some of the clothing and accessories were lent to us by some of the sponsors you see featured on the video, some where the models clothes, others were the stylist's and the vintage speedo bathing suit in the first video was Jessica's from Officine Sfera.

What were the biggest challenges? What would you have done differently?

The biggest challenges were organizing the post-production between the editors, continuity editors, typographers (our friends from &type), and motion graphics designer. We are all perfectionists and we all have demanding day jobs so it was a lot of back and forth and late nights.

As for what we would have done differently, there are obviously a few mistakes we made here and there that we would like to change but overall we are pleased with the result considering the time we had to film, our budget, and the fact that it was the first time all of us worked together on such a large scale.

What would you say to people who do not think this qualifies as porn?

We don't really consider this porn either, at least not the kind of porn we would watch, um, recreationally. We live in Italy, this is what advertising for a bottle of water looks like on television. Wouldn't you classify this more as an erotic tutorial than porn?

What would you tell people who feel insecure about seeing these models work on bikes?

We are sorry they feel insecure, there is nothing in our videos that you can't see on television or in music videos. When we came up for the concept of these video tutorials we wanted to create a video that empowered women and put them in a position of control when it came to bike maintenance. We specifically didn't want to create a video where the models were simply rubbing their cooches all over the bike, that they were actually doing something that someone might learn from. The models definitely didn't feel insecure, there were more than 12 women who worked on this video and only 5 men, we all had fun making them and it gave everyone the opportunity to add a video to their portfolio. What can we say, we all like to look at the ladies, and we like to look at smart, creative, intelligent ladies who know how to do bike maintenance and are proud of their bodies. We don't see any shame in that.

Would you like to shoot for Bike Smut again? What would you tell other potential filmmakers?

Yes, of course. We already have some ideas on the back burner and we keep coming up with more.

Beth and Bike Smuts Excellent Adventure: Colorado Oh Colorado.

What an incredible few days spent in Colorado!
Well, at first Babs Johnson, the smuttiest van in the world, decided to break down on us just outside of Fort Collins. What a beezy. So we got her towed to a local shop and were picked up by Revs brother. We spent the night at his house and the next day met his lovely wife and cute son. We broke down on Tuesday and had a show on Wednesday so we gathered all that we needed from the Van, borrowed Revs brothers extra car and made our way to Boulder for Wednesday evening. Our show took place at a warehouse called the Phoenix Asylum, where a handful of local artists rent out spaces and work there. The show was great, lovely people came and they had some interesting questions. One being, "Is it cheating if you ride more then one bike?." I personally have five different bikes so am I bike polyamorous? I'm not sure.
Phoenix Asylum Audience, Boulder, Colorado.
After the show we hung out at 303 Vodka with some of the local bike enthusiasts. Drinks were drunk, I had a Vootbeer float (vanilla vodka, rootbeer and whipped cream, yum!), and friends were made. An old friend of Revs, Gaylen, provided some hilarious commentary on the bike porn industry and made us laugh a whole bunch. Del, the co collaborator of a space called Burn Works that builds freak bikes and bike furniture among other things, offered to lend me a bike since mine was on the van still. This was for the ride that was happening Thursday night. The Happy Thursday Ride, with a theme of disco zombies, I just couldn't miss it. The gang convinced me to stay in the area for an extra day while Rev sorted out the van. Rev ended up passing out in Gaylens big red box truck, Clifford, and I stayed with a wonderful gentleman named Peter, who worked from the Phoenix Asylum.

Muffin, our waitress and fellow Drew Barrymore lookalike.
Gaylen in Clifford, the big red box truck.
Thursday morning Rev, Gaylen and a lady that I don't remember the name of met up for breakfast. It was lovely, and we had a waitress called Muffin who looked and sounded like Drew Barrymore. They think I look like her too so we took a picture together. It was a wonderful way to start the day. Phil went of to work on the van and I stayed in Boulder and hung out with Gaylen all day on Clifford. We ran errands, picked up some beer and around 7pm we got on our bikes and rode out to meet the ride. It was unlike any ride I have been on before. Each stop was extremely short, and there was a bicycle cop that rode with everyone and stood there staring at us as we danced to disco music and hung out. It was like being at a middle school dance with a chaperone watching your every move. Regardless of Sgt. Buzzkill, we had a lot of fun. It was nice to be back on a bike again and I made some new friends. One of them was Reverend Tommy, a wonderfully bald gentleman with a kind voice and soft personality. We got along well.
Audience at Deer Pile, Denver, Colorado

The Deer Pile.
Friday rolled around too quickly and it was with a heavy heart that I left Boulder. But the next show was upon us and the excitement one can only get before a show once again reared its little head. Our next show was in Denver, not too far of a drive and we made it there in no time. The space we performed at was called the Deer Pile. It was a wonderful community of local artists that open up one of the rooms so acts like our can do shows and get out our word. The show went as well as one could expect, with one gentlewoman wearing the underpants again but this time over sparkly leopard print tights. It was a laugh, and after the show we drank beers and hung out with the local artists that worked at the Deer Pile and helped us put together the show. It was there that I met a wonderful new friend and my new pen pal. His name is Ethan, and we stayed up till five o clock in the morning chain smoking hand rolled cigarettes, drinking tea and talking about life, art, music and everything in between. It was one of those conversations that belonged in a movie and one I will remember for a lifetime. Sleep finally came on a giant bean bag chair at the Deer Pile and by 10 am we were ready to start our day! We hopped in the Van, she wouldn't start, so a friend of Revs jumped her. We then drove her over to Denver Bike polo. We hang out at bike polo for the day eating a picnic or a whole chicken, baguette, cheese and assorted veggies. That was Saturday, the day we had our show in Fort Collins. Oh my oh my.
Leo and Marsha, our wonderful hosts and Revs family.
We had ended up back at Revs Brothers house where naps and showers were taken before the show. We then realized that the films had to be put on a DVD since the Lyric Cafe Theater that we were doing the show at didn't have the right system for a lap top. It took longer then expected and by the time the DVD stopped, we were late. We rushed and got there just in time (kiiinda). Rev started the show, but I am not sure how smoothly it went as I was in the cafe part setting up my merchandise table. I did go into the show half way through however and about five minuets after I did a young woman, who apparently did NOT like the show, stood up yelled "This is an outrage!" and stormed out. I am not kidding. The whole audience applauded her and one gentleman shouted after her "You are a dying breed!". Fucking hilarious. She then proceeded to argue with the barista that worked there about her views on being a conservative. Such entertainment. The show packed up around 1am and exhausted and feeling like zombies we made our way back to Revs brothers for some well needed rest.
BBQ night at Burn Works Proper
On Sunday, we stopped by Boulder again to say goodbye. We swung by the Phoenix Asylum, Burn Works and 303 Vodka warehouses and ran into Gaylen. He told us of a BBQ that night and we were down, of course. We went to a supermarket with a wonderful couple and Gaylen sitting in the back of Babs. We picked up chips, dip and STEAK. So much steak. Oh and beer. Lots of beer too. We spent the night grilling, eating RANCH (say it in a British accent I dare you) and talking about powdered donuts. It was a lovely night, however it couldn't last forever and we had to eventually clean up and go out separate ways. The next day we had a lovely lunch with Revs brother and his wife (two of the nicest people I have ever met!), and then we were on the road again. This time heading for Bozeman, Montana!

Sometimes you just gotta visit and hang out in community gardens.

What crazy adventures have we gotten ourselves into since then? Well you will find out shortly as I will be posing them right here for your very own eyes. Stay tune bike smutters! Check out more stories of our trip by searching for Beth's Perspective!

You wanna Ben Dover!?

Bike Smut is playing in Oregon for the first time on the leeward side of the Cascades!

Long have we traveled great distances from our home. With Mexico looking more likely by the min we soon will have conquered North America as soundly as we have Europe. But only a few Oregon towns outside Portland have ever experienced our radical bikesexual lore.

But we are changing that immediately. For on our way east to appease the hoards of ever more hungry bike perverts we will deliver our steamy package to one sleepy town in Central Oregon.

A town called Bend.

Be there to witness the final screening of Bike Smut 6 in Oregon! From there we continue east to Salt Lake and on to Colorado!

After Party People

One might think it is foolishly arrogent to plan for a sweet after party days before the party has even started. What is the point of the afterparty, but the sweet excitement of having loads of people who unamiously agree, "This feeling must not end!"

That's what a world premiere is like. No one in the audience has a clue what is about to come next and that thrill and mystery builds the anticipation to another level. With the most graphic program we have ever curated and excellent sponsors who can offer you:

When it is all over what will you do? Dance? Drink? Fuck? All of the above in the streets? Oh, the tyranny of choice! It is understandable that you might be suffering from some anxiety due simply to the  head-spinning caused by the possibility of so much fun!!

Let us solve your dilemma (slightly) with one more sponsor

Vancouver : the Last Orgasm

NO! Must it be? Alas tis true...

After traveling 10s of thousands of miles to bring you the most ethical porn in the world our plucky team of bicycle pornographers have concluded that this will be the final stop on

THE ORGASM TRAIL

Bike Smut: the Orgasm Trail will be showing at the
Russian Hall (600 Campbell @ E. Georgia) this
Friday the 22nd, 7:45pm, $9 for all the
DIY bicycle p0rn you could beg for

All things must come to an end, (except circles? ... until you break a spoke!) and we couldn't ask for a better place than the home of bikesexuality. For before there was the World's Largest Naked Bike Ride, there was the Wholesome Undie Ride. Before there was Bike Smut there was BikeSexual.org

So while Portland is the current reigning champion of all bike culture, it owes a lot of it's current rad-ness to the folks up north who have been throwing down since the beginning.

In their honor, we are leaving our glorious home to re-stoke the flames of bike passion! We'll be joining forces with Velopalooza, (Pedalpalooza in Vancouver) and Bike!Bike! (a gathering of bike nonprofits and collectives)!

Our itinerary starts on Friday, June 22 at 10:30am PST with us on Pedal Revolutionary talk show. Here is a blurb they put out:
We are going to perform another radio striptease, with racy music to get you in the mood for bike-loving! Time for an hour and a half of the raw Reverend Phil; committed, unadulterated, and ever-so-obliging! Tune in to hear the stirring sounds of whispered expletives, torn-off rain ponchos and peeled-down bike shorts!

You'll also have the chance to win tickets to this Friday's Bike Smut: the Orgasm Trail by answering challenging skill-testing questions such as: "What are you wearing?" Note: you need to be a current member of Coop Radio to win, but it's easy to join. If you make a pledge using this form and send it back to me you're eligible. Pay-what-you-want for this -- your donation will support bike radio and cooperatively-owned community radio into the future. Anyone pledging $60 or more will get a CD of amazing bicycle music!!! (Or a download if you want to save plastic.)

Then join the Bike Bike-ers as we dissect and analyze the connection between bikes and sexuality with our "Dismantling Bike Porn Collage Making Workshop" Friday at Purple Thistle @ 4:30
Feel free to BYO scissors, glue, and stacks of porn or bike mags for cutting. Or just use ours!

Then the big show just up the street from the workshop to the Russian Hall (doors at 7:45) for the FINAL SCREENING OF THE ORGASM TRAIL.

There will be other fine events happening all weekend and summer long, check out the Velopalooza calendar or just go out on your bike and see what joy you can discover!

Sprung! again: May 8th - Power

Tomorrow (May 8th) will be our second installment of Sprung!

The theme is Power

Here is what we have to say about that:

It affects every relationship, whether it is with close friends or authorities. It can be used for or against you, for good or evil. We strive to maintain control of it in our own lives, and the ability to  choose when to give it up. Power is also inherent in how we harness energy. Being able to act on ones desires of what we ride and who we ride.

So considering the power that the 'church' (catholic or otherwise, but the catholics have a long reputation of shoving their beliefs down your pants) yields over our body, especially women's sexuality.. We thought we would show the wonderfully light-hearted Monella by Tinto Brass.

It's a charming little tale about a young couple in 1950s Italy. They are engaged, but Lola has had enough of saving herself for marriage (she is HORNY!) plus, she wants to make sure her man can satisfy before they take the plunge!

Full of pervy priest, double standards and daddy issues, it plays with a plethora of power dynamics. Tinto Brass, known as 'The King of European Erotica' worked in avant-garde film up until the mid 70s when he made the leap to erotica. His erotic films are still full of experimental techniques and lots of ass shots. (He was a notorious ass man). This, however, might have been what inspired him to make one of the sexiest bicycle scenes in cinema history. If you want to see it, you will have to stop by!

GET SPRUNG!

Oh dear, is there a 12" adjustable wrench in our pocket or are we happy to see you?!?!

SPRUNG!

A weekly series of movies and performances to encourage better sex and better transportation

Every Tuesday night in May Bike Smut will take over the Clinton St Theater with a new program designed to titillate, educate and motivate. The summer months are nearly upon us; when was the last time you gave your ride a long, hard one over?  Speaking of long hard ones, when was the last time you were in an audience full of consenting adults watching porn together? And not just any porn, porn to change the world by.

That's right, we put a bike-fucking bird on it

Each week the films and performances in SPRUNG! will focus on a particular idea relating to sex and transportation without repeating any of our amazing content. The themes are:

May 1st REVOLUTION
May 8th POWER
May 15th MUTATIONS
May 22nd FAITH CYCLE
May 29th POLY-NOMADAL
By riding bicycles we take control of our transportation, of how we move across our communities and interact with them. Bicycles free us from the rigid boundaries of a car.  By asking our community to make erotic films, we can help redefine obscenity, and free ourselves from the capitalist ideals of pornography. Bike Smut is about reclaiming agency over our daily lives and defeating the patriarchal appropriation of our bodies.

But this isn't about bikers vs drivers, or queers vs breeders, or pervs vs norms, or film snobs vs couch potatoes (well, it kind of is about the latter; we HATE when people shut themselves in). This is about elevating our lives. Both porn lovers and haters are enamored with the way Bike Smut engages topics of sexuality, providing a venue for emerging artists to share their ideas and a forum for discussion and exploration for all.  Drivers, walkers, longboarders, Rascal pilots, all are encouraged to share. (Note: we are making an exception for pocket bikes, if you choose to ride one of those around your neighborhood you probably deserve to be alone).

WEEK ONE - REVOLUTION

What a way to kick off this series of movies that have inspired better sex and better transportation then by capping off the May Day celebrations with movies inspired by the Revolution?!!?

It is our honor to host the Portland Premiere of Bruce LaBruce's infamous "Raspberry Reich"
"The Raspberry Reich" is an agit-porn movie about modern leftist Germans adopting the culture and politics of the extreme left wing movements of the 1970s. The leader of the Raspberry Reich, Gudrun, who has patterned herself after Gudrun Ensslin, one of the main members of the Baader-Meinhoff Gang (the Red Army Faction), spends her time indoctrinating vital, athletic young men to her cause. A strict devotee of Wilhelm Reich, she believes that heterosexual monogamy is a bourgeois construct that must be smashed in order to achieve true revolution. To that end, she forces her followers to have sex with each other to prove their mettle as authentic revolutionaries. A porno-political-palooza.

The film also acts as a critique of the left, particularly in its tendency to not practice what it preaches via unrealistic and dogmatic political rhetoric. The film is an examination of the phenomenon of "terrorist chic", depicting how the signifiers of radicalism are now packaged and sold by capitalist culture as a way of neutralizing and rendering ineffectual any sort of viable, sincere revolutionary impetus.

With manifestos, blow jobs, threats of violence, and decrees of "death to the capitalist pig" whilst fucking in the street The Raspberry Riech will leave more than an impression. How this film has never been officially screened in Portland before is beyond us.

You would think after 5 years we would have seen just about everything to do with bikes and sex, and  be satisfied! Yet, this could not be further from the truth! Our chains are still lubed and waiting to be pumped full of the awesome power of DIY transportation and pornography!

We had some excellent entries over the past years, ranging everywhere from 'fall off your bike' hilariousness to 'fall off your bike' horniness. Including some great international entries we received while enacting our world domination plan in Europe! Our community of radical bike-sexuals has proven many times over that they are smart, funny and aware! We are so grateful for every submission we have received in the past, and we are over-joyed to continue share great art with other like-minded individuals, the world over!

We have some really exciting plans for the future of Bike Smut, but they won't be possible without your contributions. Maybe you saw the movies and were inspired. Or maybe you saw the movies and were unimpressed. Maybe you didn't see the movies, but want to ensure you don't miss it next time round. (The best way to get us to come to our town is by making a movie!) Maybe you are a cyclist who wants to inspire your friends to be more open about sex, or introduce your pervy/kinky friends to the wonderful empowerment of the bicycle. Maybe you just like bikes and sex. It can be that simple!!

Europe, we are talking to you! The success of our first ever European tour will be measured by how many great movies we get from YOU! It will also determine our return. You want more?? Show us what you got.

Steps to making your bike porn happen:

  1. Get an idea! What do you like about bikes and sex? This years theme is 'Turning Trixxx'. What does that mean to you? Sex workers doing bar spins? Obtaining coitus on a bike whilst riding it? (Actually no, no one has done that before!! WTF!?) We are not too strict on our themes. So, whatever your idea, make it sexy, make it clever, make it awesome. Just make bike porn!!!
  2. Find a friend(s). It is possible to make a totally solo and totally great bike porn. But even if you and your bike are the only 'actors' its great to have a few more people on board. Camera operators are handy and make it easier to get better shots. Musicians can be great for providing sexy backing music. More people means more ideas, which can lead to really really great art. This project is all about community, so get your community involved in a great project!
  3. Get a camera. (What, that cell phone shoots video??) We dont care how you shoot it. Just find a way to get it in some shareable format. Cameras are everywhere these days. Shoot in super 8, shoot in HD, string a bunch of still images together from your iphone.  We prefer 16x9 ratio, but if you wanna shoot in pixelsvison or some other crazy format, we are ok with that.
  4. Make your movie. Lights, camera, action as they say. Once you get it all recorded you are going to want to try your hand at some editing. Sharing ideas works best when they are quick and concise. Keep it under 10 mins (we think 5 mins and under is even better!) and the audience is more likely to stay engaged and understand what you are trying to say. That also keeps our show to one evening long, rather than an all night marathon of bike porn.
  5. Fill out the 'Entry Form.' I know, i know...paperwork!!!??! It's a boring part of the biz, but we gotta do it. We kept it as short as possible, and it's a little more work for you that means A LOT less work for us. You can get your copy from HERE. If you have questions, send us an email.
  6. Get your movie in our hands by May 6th! Once you have the entry form you will also know how to send us your movie. Once we have it, we promise not to put it online, release a DVD or tell your grandma.

May June 6th is the deadline for Bike Smut 6: Turning Trixxx
Just in case you didn't get that before.

You make it possible for bikers to talk about sex, you make it
possible for sex fiends to enjoy biking, you make your community
stronger and more aware. You share these things with people you care
about because it improves their lives. All you have to do is make a movie.

P.S. We have some super sweet posters and postcards for our 'call for entries', featuring the beautiful art above. If you work in a bookstore, bike shop, bordello or some similar community space that might want to share these ideas in poster/postcard format, please get in touch. bikesmut@gmail.com

Have fun, play safe, make porn!
