Crafy Handmade Fetish Ware

Last year we showed an amazing film (a couple actually) from Montreal. In Brazen Saddles, an all female bike gang tore around the city, going wherever their hearts desired. They lured and captured a bike cop and then the audience was oft heard to scream, "Fuck the Police!"

In this amazing movie the gang all wore handmade bike tube and tire vests that looked stunning. Many people would ask about the vests after the show. Finally you can own your own piece of bikesexual fetish ware made by real Montreal bikesexuals, Oxyd Creations!

Bike Smut is proud of the hand crafted wares made by our filmmakers and community. Its rare that such items can be made available to the general community. Below is the creator's description of her handmade bike tube harness.

This adjustable, vegan strap-on harness is made with love for our beautiful queer community.

I designed this harness after feeling frustrated with a lack of affordable, eco-friendly, and quality harnesses available on the market. The harness is lined with soft black felt, which overlaps onto the front so the edges are all soft as well. There is a cotton canvas between the felt and the bike tube exterior to make the harness more solid. And the exterior is made from recycled bike tubes, from Montreal's bicycle co-ops. The tubes are easy to clean, and the straps, which are bare tube against the skin, grip well to your curves while still being soft and comfortable. I thought I would need to line the adjustable straps with felt too, and was surprised to find that the tubes felt great against bare skin.

The harness can be adjusted to fit any size - there are adjustment rings in the front and back. The straps are really long - you can cut them shorter when your harness arrives, or wear them tucked in, as pictured in the first photo. If you usually wear XS size pants, I will ask you for your exact measures, just in case I have to make the harness a little smaller.
Your toy is held in place with a silver o-ring in front, which is easily removable with snaps. The harness comes with two sizes of rings - 3.9cm and 5.2cm (inner diameter).

The back of the harness is decorated with recycled bike chain and a gear - if you'd prefer not to have this detail, I can leave it out. It adds weight, but isn't sharp.

And finally! This harness can be turned upside down and worn as a bad-ass underbust corset top, as shown in the last photo. What I'm really hoping for is that someone bolder than me will wear this on a night out, and then when that cute person you've been eyeing all night compliments your sexy top, you invite them home to show them what else it can do.

Media Monday: VICE - Culture Blog is Like Others

An open letter to the editors of VICE:

Thank you for publishing an article about Bike Smut, our plucky little, internationally touring, erotic bicycle film festival. Among the torrent of attention-starved independent working artists you chose us to talk about in mostly encouraging terms with your audience.

Credit goes to the author, Josiah Hesse, who took time to learn about Bike Smut and ask good questions, some of which we have never been asked before. He was especially focused on ideas regarding objective sexuals. The research done to explain the condition of being attracted to an object is fascinating and through (although he misused the term fetish*)

Some objects are pretty attractive as they are and certainly deserve some special attention. One of our favorite essays on the topic of bikes and sex came from a recent graduate of Arizona State University who joined the tour for 4 months. She described the love of a bicycle as more pure than any love between a man and woman because of the impossibility of reproduction, whereas when two able-bodied people hump they might have some lizard brain programming that is telling them to make babies, thus sullying the purity of the love. As long as we are are allowing others to guess at the intentions and awareness of reptile-like functions of people we might as well go whole-gay-hog and say that even between two same-sexed people it is possible that there might be some reproductive programming going on. "But," she would remark in a particularly assertive tone, "human-bicycle relations is only for pleasure."

We never bothered to tell her that for many, cycle-relations are more "business" but we also are also not the right people to make that call. After EIGHT YEARS of sharing DIY pornography across the hemisphere we have somewhat lost the distinction between business and pleasure.

No, for the most part the article was great. We do take umbrage with the title which currently reads as such:

There's a Film Festival for People

Who Get Turned on by Bicycles

However if you were to look at the URL you can see when they originally posted the article the title was a little more "edgy":

Bike-Smut-is-the-Festival-for-

Pedalphilic-Bicycle-Bangers

Neither title is accurate. "Bike Smut is for people..." yes that much is true. Aroused by bicycles? Sure,  maybe... why not. But really even that feels too limiting. It's not as if we expect everyone in the audience to regularly masturbate to Independent Fabrication catalogues (although they are quite nice).

We regularly hear from audience members who were dragged to the show by their friends. They wait around, eager to speak with our organizers to say "Thank you! I don't even like bikes!" And that is one of the biggest compliments we receive, right up there with, "Thank you! I don't even like porn!"

Modern living encourages us to carve out a special little niche where only the like-minded enter into your news-feed's timeline but this is so boring. The challenge of engaging ideas that are bold and run counter to what you believe - that's exciting! When we get put on our ass and learn that even after revolving around the sun dozens of times we still cannot escape the shining illumination of a new Truth.

Yes, bikes are sexy.**
Yes, porn should be better.***
Yes, your choices about porn and transport have an affect on the world and regardless of what naysaying scenesters might write to justify their own lack of gumption, you actually can make your personal space and thus the community you engage with better by riding a bike and/or adopting sex-positive practices.

In an ideal world the article would mention our upcoming call for submissions for our 9th year of "banging pedalphiles." Or our success presenting movies from so many different filmmakers. We have received nearly 100 films from various artists and shared them approximately 500 times and never had a single leak of our content. We don't put the films online and we don't take your body and try to sell DVDs making you into freak show. This is our promise to our filmmakers. This way anyone can contribute to our project without fear of being outted as a pervert or having to explain one's choices to judgmental relatives over holiday dinner.

But more importantly, the ideals of good sex and good transportation are so important to good living that we spend most of our lives in pursuit of one of the other (or both at the same time). Look at the amount of money spent on advertising cars; look at the way sex is used to sell everything! Once a person has claimed their own mobility and sexuality they have no concern of the opinions of bastards who work late trying to find new ways to convince others to buy shit they don't need by lowering vulnerable people's self-esteem.

Any of these would have been an exciting ideas for the article to focus on. But just getting keeping eyeballs on the screen for a few extra seconds seems like an impressive accomplishment and we can't blame them for wanting to sensationalize...  but after years of avoiding other similar media exposé we were hoping VICE might dig deeper into our politics than where some people choose to put their genitals.

So thanks to VICE editors for helping to share the words "Bike Smut" even if you didn't quite have the time, space or mental patience to actually get beyond the sophomoric part of putting a saddle up your butt.

----------------------------------------------------
There's an important distinction to make between the fetishization of an inanimate object (merely using it to get off), and seeing that object as an entity unto itself that inspires love and connection in a person. - Josiah H.
The meaning of the word "fetish" has been diluted over the years to basically being on par with "having an interest in" which is pretty milquetoast compared to its more historical definition where a person would only be described as suffering from a fetish if they absolutely needed said object/activity to achieve sexual satisfaction. A person who likes smelling bike saddles would not qualify as a fetish unless that saddle was always under nose during sex. Okay, we can stop being so annoying... for now.

Toronto Shame

This Message was posted on our titillating (if not a little frustrating FaceBook page) following our first of three Canadian Turning TriXXX screenings:
Today i attended a bike smut show in Toronto.
I was shocked to walk into the venue to find a projected display of "We want porn in Iraq." i immediality felt replused by this image comming from a political, activist and queer background. As an audience i sat in my chair and participated in the entire event vieweing awaiting for an explanation, or a sort of relation to the image of a man holding the at poster stating these words. Unfortunatley there was no refrence or dialouge invested in explaining the context of the image displayed. I found this profoundly offensive, especially since most of the bodies reflected in the "short films" were not people of color and have no connection to the language or display of such words.
I then asked one of the organizers of the event, and she stated she has not been long on the tour and doesn't understand why it was displayed. That's applauling!!
Using people of color to display repressive sexuality is not okay. Using IRAQ as a continent torn into pieces by the united states for years in a war that is uncalled for based on false statment based on WOD is even more problematic. The middle east doesnt need rescuing by privilaged people, it doesn't need the outside world defining it's sexuality and it's take on the expression of sexuality.
As an arab queer identified person, i find it extremely problematic to showcase this image without explanation and no understanding. SHAME on you, using the suffering of Iraqi people to advance your agenda on obscenity, and shame on you for failing to put this image in context with the entire event! SHAME ON BIKE SMUT!

Whew! Its all a bit more than we are ready to process at the moment. What do you think?

UPDATE
8:15pm PST This is particularly interesting because we recently just listened to a Savage Love podcast featuring Make Love Not Porn advocate, Cindy Gallop. She is advocating that the volume of porn is only a problem because we have no context to place it in.
8:30pm PST Here is a photo of the incident with Poppy Cox presenting in her Victorian bicycle wear (who had no involvement with the image appearing behind her)

Audience Reactions to "Turning TriXXX" - Seattle

Whenever possible we love to give voice to the people who live the life and make their community more exciting by their presence. We had the opportunity to meet one such leader in his community after our recent screening in Seattle.

Abundant a user on the popular sexual website, FetLife had this to say about our new program Bike Smut 6: Turning TriXXX:

The show was great. Fun mix of content (though I am a straight dude withe the predictable biases). I can see how more gender & orientational diversity would appeal, though that clearly depends on the submissions you get. And some of the prior showings I've seen had tons of diversity.

handmade bike chain choker by Abundant
I really enjoyed the surrounding questions, conversation, and interaction with the audience, even if we were a little reluctant to engage. People seemed looser after the show; maybe prime with some questions before, and then return to those same questions after?

Also, I'd love it if the URLs presented in the films were also available somewhere else. Maybe they are in the blog? I'm thinking of indiepornrevolution and something like lexieweb? The euro buttplug ride one. And any others I'm forgetting.

Anyway, that's my thoughts. Thanks again for putting on such a fun show for bikesexuals like us.
Thank you Abundant! Having excited people wanting to examine and appreciate various forms of sexuality make this massive project worthwhile. That and the handlebar rides... and the parties. Okay, most of this is seriously fabulous, but we are grateful for your words just the same!

Media Monday: The "F" Word: Feminist

Well it's Monday somewhere...

You will forgive us for our excitement, it is not everyday that we take on the challenge of reading much less writing about what we consider the apex of "your doing it wrong" social theory. But feminism persists, even as most regard it with disinterest or distain.  Something to be feared for it implies the topics you are about to engage in may make you feel insecure about how you live your life. People may want the world to change, but they generally hope that it will all change around them, leaving them blissfully unaffected because they consider themselves fine just the way they are.

No insufferable joke will provide you escape its encompassing reach, and no manner of  of ignoring will make it go away. There it is, to liberate everyone equally even if you don't like it.

and this equal access to all regardless of their grouping includes sex!

(not that all we should have access to everyone's sex, but that everyone should be able to own their own sexuality

But fear not landowning white, right-handed, middle class, Protestant, heterosexual men, there is good news for you too (which is great to write as I am pretty solidly in that class) -  feminism will mean better sex for you and your partners!

It is just that talking about sex is already kind of intimidating. Annoying opportunity for awkward misinterpretations lurk at every double entendre, and make it feel safer not to talk at all.

So you could imagine the pause of concern that followed our whipping out of our advance copy of Momentum: Making Waves in Sexuality, Feminism, & Relationships to our favorite gathering of jocks caused. But if you expected more disinterest and disdain you would be wrong, because we play bike polo in Portland Fucking Cascadia.

The groups gathered to watch bike polo on the hottest day of the year and between the cheers, jeers and laughter they took to the topics presented like a duck to water, casually plopping right into the conversation, gregariously offering opinion and experience on queer culture, sex and agism, Fetlife and social media, and reproductive rights like they had been training for it their whole lives. I was proud of my friends and I felt lucky to have them.

The book, Selected Essays by 2012 Speakers Advocating Change in Current Sexual Dialogues
Edited by Tess Danesi, Dee Dennis and Inara de Luna opens up all sorts of exciting paths to more understanding of most disenfranchised people, but eventually we were forced to ask the next obvious question: Does it include bikes?

Not to be a transportationist, but these are the kinds of tools that are simple and obvious that they feel generally overlooked. And there is a reason.

"Those child's toys don't belong on the street" might be a fair rebuttal. Most of the bikes sold in the US won't have lights attached to them. This is because they are designed for recreational purposes, not "real travel" Can you imagine if auto makers tried to sell cars without headlights?

And yet the young are not abandoning their bikes for cars the way they used to. According to this article in the Grist (which is quoting Advertising Age, so we have no reason to expect they are deceiving us) over the past 30 years the share of 17-year-olds with a driver's license dropped by a third. Several other stats follow explaining the rising cost to the growing social-financial inequality. The social status that car ownership offers is diminishing as well, as the culture of cool shows fixed gear bikes in every conceivable form.

After a few hours in the park we were putting down the book with a somewhat comfortable "well, it's great that someone said this but can we add an expectant "…and?!?"" We were cocky. We felt so assured of ourselves and our place. We have the all answers, if only everyone would just do what we say it would all be better!

It was only in picking up the collection of essays that we realized our folly. But it's late, in fact there is barely a time zone left where it is still Monday, so learning about the rest and perving out on the hot biker bodies will have to wait.

STAY TUNED: SAME QUEER FEMMINIST PINKO CHANNEL... SAME "BIKE" TIME

Quatable Quotient

We get a bit of fan mail now and again, and although we frequently remind them that they can post their thoughts in the comments for all to see (thus actually helping our cause) they are usually shy or lazy or both.

Due to these frequent scenarios we have decided to quote them (when appropriate) and provide this living document to the internets for consideration

I realy enjoyed what your doing and it changed the way the I think about about porn and sexuality so KEEP IT UP! Dan Morton - Bethlehem, PA

"I like just getting on my bike and riding, I love the adrenaline rush of a long sprint out, or a sharp technical descent. I like the excuse to play in the mud. I like that it's a sport that mates man with machine without the machine doing all the work. I like that it's a
sensible part of the solution to urban transportation."
PJ - Montreal, QB

It was perfect: Boy meets girl. Boy falls for girl. Boy straps on dildo. The rest is history. From his hard chest to his hairy legs to his cute angel face, the boy was every girl's dream. I'm not sure everybody in the theater really understood until a little later in the
film that what they figured for a dude had once been a chick and just might consider themselves neither at this point. Talk about a teaching moment."
Scott Rice  -  Seattle Gay News

"If you cant knock yourself unconscious with no2, i guess you have a problem with consciousness."  Bicycle Jesus - Seattle, WA

Thanks for the kind and usually relevant words! If you have seen a program and want to share your thoughts you can leave a comment. It does a lot more for us to have your opinions stated publicly than to send us a private email. So what are you afraid of? Will someone find out that you like bikes? sex?

Portland Refactory Peroid

The Orgasm Trail has come to its gooey conclusion, and tho there are thousands more horny cyclists we have yet to fulfill, we have decided to take a short break from all our touring to give our bodies time to recover from the epic travels we have had.

In the past year we traveled vast distances across varied physical and mental landscapes. But therewas little to prepare us for our Portland reunion. The Clinton St Theater seats 250 but lines were out the door as the happy-go-fucky perverts filtered in and out of our spacious venue, many complaining that there was no room. Sometimes the streets are full, and sometimes you have to squeeze in to make space for yourself, but when a red bus load of crusty Los Angeles bike punks rolls up demanding bicycle erotica what are we to do?

By the time it was over many on the streets stood in a state of disbelief, their mouths (and/or other orifices)  left agape with all the shock and awe of what they had beered witness to.
Suddenly someone yelled, "Flash Mob Naked Bike Ride!!!!!"  There was a quick exchange about who would carry clothes and suddenly people started stripping down to their undies, or less.
 http://piapie.typepad.com/piapie/2012/02/wallpaper.html

But really it is the casual approach to sex with the business approach to clothes that makes it work. Hellyea you are looking good! (or so you might say)

Southwest commentary

Via a Bike Smut aficionado in Phoenix

There are themes each year, but the theme never quite actually winds up being what it's supposed to be. It was supposed to be _The Orgasm Trail_, but the recurring themes in the shorts were fuck machines and forest nymphs. Lesbian hookup shot stop motion made another appearance this year with more bike content in it, but it's hard to top the first take where this was done entirely with Poloroids. The whole affair is completely DIY. Films come from local bicycle communities. Some times they're clever. Often they have elements of parody. Often they're just artsy. If you're turning your nose up because you're afraid you might catch teh gay or the actors might not have the correct tit:ass:waist ratio, well, you're doing it wrong. If it were commercial, safe, and predictable, it wouldn't be interesting.
Anyway, even if you didn't make it to the show doesn't mean you can't make a film. Films are shown in a traveling exhibition for a year and then destroyed, so you can still run for president. They don't have to be and often aren't explicit. I'll loan you my, eh, vintage, Fisher Price PixelVision 2000 camera, if you like.
Eg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyLtVLR5Rrk.
In the words of John Maynard Keynes, we devote our intelligences to anticipating what average opinion expects the average opinion to be. Fuck that. Some dude named Maynard has more balls than you. Make a film.

we couldn't say it better. and while I am pretty sure no Bike Smut movies have been made out of just Polaroids, many have used film and still cameras in leu of the fast and easy digital camcorders.

regardless of how you choose to capture your inspiring images of sexy transportational freedom make sure you share it with us so we can share it with the world!

BikeTaxiBabes - in depth

We just arrived in Austin and immediately were treated to local beer, tortas and our host's copy of the Bike Taxi Babes calendar.

In a word, simple. Possibly the most simple calendar we have ever seen. No flavor text, nothing about the model/pedicab driver/people messenger, no supplementary images in the corner,  no phases of the moon, no special dates of interest in Austin history.

here is what you get:

12 large, quality pictures
365* boxes with numbers
1 page explaining why**

Simple. As. Fuck.

Cant complain much when they do it simple and do it right, but in the name of fair and balanced bikeseuxal journalism we offer these two notes:

There was nothing exciting about the background either (a simple greyish gradient... er grayshient?).  We know first hand how challenging finding a dozen unique locations or backdrops can be, and if not done right... it can make a lot of hard work and good intentions look like a pile of stupid.

The biggest complaint offered by our team (you didn't know, we had an entire TEAM working on this analysis) was the curious makeup technique. Why so much white face? Was it old time antiquing? Flash back to a time when every bike race came with personal flour delivery?

On the whole, an excellent way to keep track of the days. Get your direct from BikeTaxiBabes.com

*there are lots of boxes, many have numbers you know what a calendar looks like
** The creators of the calendar, Dropout Publications a mainstay in Austin bike culture, made this calendar as a fundraiser for Texas Bike Collation

only days left in the race for bikesexual calendars; dont let the booty eclipse your wall!

Rapture and Ruin, the past and future of the UK Bikesexual

We have had a pretty stunning stream of badass media promotions and reviews. From Malmo's stunning 3 page cover story to the First Day's ass-ess-ment of our first UK show, we have been basking in the glory of great media.

Then we came north and things have seemed to gone to hell. Liverpool, Birmingham, Nottingham, and Glasgow have all tried to turn our uplifting program of short, erotic movies into a vapid, scat fest.

And now, thanks to the stunningly in-depth coverage from the London Evening Standard, not only have we been crowned the climax of bicycle cinema but apparently, we are Dutch.
Accuracy is a nice thing if you can get it, but more important to us is intention, and the intention of getting more active bodies to engage their communities is about as important as anything in the world. And in all fairness, the two hottest new bike pornographers are, in fact originally from Amsterdam.

So it is our great joy to present you with this latest recap of our Bristol show from Cap'n Bike Beard. With more mini-bike races and dance performances, we can promise that this media wont leave you wondering if you stepped in poo.

Sweden talks back

We take up a lot of space on this blog talking about ourselves, our plans for the future, and generaly how awesome we are (we're so awesome!). And usually no one ever talks back to us (except for the comment thread on our Malmo post, which we heartily recommend you review). It's just us, talking and talking. But we don't like that. We want to hear what the common people think. Well, the common people have finally spoken. In Swedish, but nonetheless, thanks to the comments section of our news appearance in the Sydsvenskan newspaper, we now have a precise composite picture (vie Google Translate) of what the people think of us and the bike porn project;

Those who want to see these people do porn have to be very sick

Would be interesting to see what the "jones" is going on behind the four walls. Or wait a minute ... Believe it is reflected in these bizarre lust you can think freely from the internet.

There are no monkeys in Sveige därmemot a Bernadotte and another variant of that, and so you yourself of course. The monkeys from the zoo.

I wonder if
Mitt Möllan gets its business wholly or partly funded by Swedish taxpayers' money. "Cultural subsidies." I would probably really do not know, because I think the answer would be disheartening.
- SRZ

Well, it must be tender to have sex with a bike, you've certainly heard the joke about the nun who rode without a saddle. Well, they're just so happy, they make of course no harm.
- Reds TV

Bicycles who have sex ?????
What are they for? SEXTASY.
Ride on !!!!! Do not forget your helmet.

Happy Media Day

So nice to start things off right with some upbeat (and accurate even!) writings about Bike Smut.

We hope this article from Zoe Roux will stay online longer than the interview from Romania. We are not sure why that article was removed from the nets but our team is leisurely pursuing the story but we love the artwork and are stoked to see it frequently theived (cause it means others think its pretty fuckin' fly too).

Our favorite part of the interview?
None of the films are available for purchase or on the internet. If you want to see it you have to invite Bike Smut to your city, making the mini-festival a social event usually followed by a party.

According to the website all invitations should include offers of cookies and alcohol, and anyone can submit their own film.

True that! You should expect to see the new trailer for Bike Smut 5: SPEED on this here blog in the next two days!

You have less than one month to create your own fantastic work of bicycle erotica... start today!

Canadian Reviews - 4:PLAY

Well its been a pretty crazy ride so far, there have been epic barn burning-style parties; sedate, yet attentive coffee shop explorations; consensual biker body touching (sort of the opposite of personification of a bike) and we still have the "Canadian Sex Capitol" coming up tomorrow!

But what do the Canadians think? They can be a reluctant bunch, requiring prodding, jabbing, heckling, even "awkward salmoning" just to get a response.

Well here is the time and place to share your opinions. Remember, this is only for Canadians (or people who saw the smut in Canada). So no cheating!

Give us a hand will you?

A new twist on a classic joke. Dear Speaker of the House, we know you are a busy man so our tech team installed "The Clapper" in the Legislature to improve the legislatures efficiency and so that you can make your own strobe light effects during speeches.

We are dubious that it will "clap on" very well, but when they have a pair of jodhpurs we will be the 1st in line.

Happy Rub Up Against Your Saddle Day

Intriguing... just what does pass as an "appropriate corporate april fools joke" these days? On one hand we are amused by this seemingly innocent offering onto the world of bike-sexuality. On the other hand we are offended by the lack of visual display. Could we please see Uranus in action?

If only Perl Izumi knew all the things we do to their products on film!

If you are excited to up the ante, your opportunity to create wonderful explicit works of bikesexuality is here!

Still reactionary!

We have hit our Southeastern most point of the Backlash Tour!

Now it is time to start heading north where we continue our mad rush into radical, sex-positive biker's pants.

We have a lot of great things going for us, but nothing as amazing as word of mouth. We have been getting some pretty outstanding opinions shared with us, the most recent just came in from Orlando:

I wanted to thank you guys for coming through, I honestly couldnt haave imagined the night turning out better. All the films are so beautiful and expose parts (pun intended) of human nature that is usually suppressed or avoided in public discussion. I love being naked and am very body positive and your videos are a reminder and an outlet to all of us body lovin' ladies and gents out there...

San Antonio Returns the Flavor

We have been the recipients of some pretty good media coverage over the years. This year's Bike Porn program has pulled people's ears back more than ever, and coincidentally, this article in the San Antonio Current continues the trend of excellent articles that actually get the point of creating a safe space for adults to be adults.

A silent stop-motion called Cyclust kicked off the film programming, and its rainy-day palette and naturalistic girl-on-girl action modified my expectations for the evening. The even-shorter short that followed, Sperm, a clever black-and-white, culminated with the titular cell penetrating a bicycle gear. It wasn’t so weird to watch porn in public.

The “bound” element of the tour’s title became more pronounced in No No No Yes, wherein a boozing, scantily clad woman unlocked her bikefriend — a gentleman with a seat strapped to his back, handlebars to his neck — and proceeded to caress his parts. Ashley Lindstrom

With all the McDonald's Playplaces and similar hypoallergenic areas in the world these days it seems that "child friendly" is the only concern that measures these days. What is missing from this picture of course is that without safe spaces for adults to consider and discuss adult themes people are forced to repress feelings which often results in unpleasant releasing of pent up emotions in inappropriate places.

Thus the prude who steadfastly refuses to even discuss the idea of porn is basically committing themselves to having a tragically awkward time dealing with such matters in the future.

So watch some fucking porn.

ReMembering Oregon, a discussion of sexuality

Hey now, two shows into the Backlash Tour and we are already getting some FANfuckingTastic reviews of Bike Porn 3: Cycle Bound.

Grace Pettygrove's article of the bike porn screening and discussion at The University of Oregon totally hits the mark. Her column includes a number of gems like this:

The featured shorts in “Cycle Bound” reflect a diversity of ideas about what sex is, could be and should be. Some of the movies are pure comedy, parodying clichés in the porn industry or playing up any available visual puns offered by the bicycle frame. Several films feature nude Portland bikers doing awesome things on their Franken-bikes: dive-bombing hills, playing games and racing around the city. Conceptually, this still falls under the category of porn: For a Portland bike cultist, tall-bike jousting is as good as sex.

Curious, we have been promised tall bike sex for so long, its almost upsetting. And really the way some people have sex is a lot more like jousting than they would probably like to admit.

But rather than just call it a bit of nice, fluffy university media, Pettygrove goes one step further and begins to inspect and possibly even unravel the nature of sex positivity.

I also came to question the limits of the sex positivity movement. Can such a cerebral distinction actually draw the line between exploitation and empowerment? Though there were obvious elements of role reversal and satire in the raciest moments of Bike Porn — including a short that used a child’s bicycle to parody the concept of “kiddie porn,” and a scene in Tour de Pants that looked a lot like gang rape — I don’t imagine that a victim of sexual exploitation or assault could sit through the whole presentation and feel empowered.

Indeed. Just as one man's treasure is another man's cum bucket, so too there is no way to allow vast freedoms of expression without potentially ruffling a few feathers. That said another viewing might show that the "victim" of the gang rape gave verbal agreement to consent not once, but twice! Yea, we didn't notice it the 1st time either and it definitely is not using a very rigorous standard. (could she be expressing verbal agreement without actually providing informed conscent?)

The evening was punctuated by a surprisingly coherent expression of bikesexuality by almost everyone in attendance. The classroom was able to agree on a few points:

Either way, thanks for asking good questions. If there is a limit on the value of sex-positive culture we hope we never find it!

The show last night in Ashland was fantastic. What an amazing venue! They even had chairs! We were asked which hotel we stole our robes from and also had a request for unicycle porn.

On our way to San Francisco, with a possible polo turny in the works on Saturday!
