THE LAST SMUTTY DANCE IN TORONTO

We are fresh out of Harvest Festival, the electro-dance filled forest 300 km north of Toronto. We partied, we made silly, we worked with our local host to fabricate a pedal-powered disco... and we showed some classic bicycle pornography to some hippies in the woods. Now its time to get deep into Canada's most popular city for our last ever screening here!

The first show we ever did was at Cine Cycle and, honest to mercy, it included some locally made, live-action tentacle porn.

The following year we were treated to some bicycle bondage as our hosts proceeded to tie up and suspend $15,000 worth of bikes that made as art, never to be ridden. Plus a dance party that raged past dawn. Stunning.

Our 5th year was half consumed by our first European tour, the other half we were driving back along the southern border on The Orgasm Trail (because the south didn't get the 4th year)

We returned to Cine Cycle for Bike Smut 6: Turning Trixxx, which included our first collaboration from the amazing sex-positive store, Good For Her. On top of providing excellent body-positive support to those exploring sexuality they also organize the Feminist Porn Awards, which are on sabbatical at the moment, likely for similar reasons that Bike Smut is retiring... when you hold yourself to such high standards its difficult to maintain a pristine track record, and as they say, no good deed goes unpunished.

The following year was a somewhat stressful ride from Buffalo that included an emergency repair of our hand-built trailer.   There was some serious biker cred back in those days. Yeesh!

Last year we upped-the-punx with a collaboration with Soy Bomb housing coop and the Welcome to Toronto art collective.  Fabulous art was made and distributed and the party was a massive success.

This year we return to our Toronto roots. Back with the crazy old British bike mechanic who loves independent film and dirty jokes. Come on down and wish us farewell as we dance the night away!

The Porny Express keeps rolling!

After an extended visit in Chicago (with a side trip to Indiana for the first time ever!) Bike Smut made use of the tracks and plopped down in Buffalo for a day in time to witness the handmade bike trailer shear off near the chainstays. So that was exciting. Thankfully we happened to be visiting another Bike Wizard who just happened to be in the process of setting up a metal shop.

So 10 beers and one pizza later the trailer had a few extra ounces of steel to reinforce. You want to talk about confidence? Immediately afterward it went 144 Kilometers from Buffalo to Hamilton, ON through wind, ruts, train tracks, confusing directions and insane drivers without any trouble.

Now its parked in the questionable safety of our Toronto Bike Smut HQ.

Perhaps if there is demand we will bring it out to the show this Thursday for you to marvel upon. Where are the mutant, cargo bike freaks? This is your chance to see what the best minds in Portland/Minneapolis/Buffalo can manifest!

ReMembering Bike Love in Toronto

Well it happens. You are excited to travel, you have all sorts of plans, you expect to meet all manner of people AND YOU DO!

But then somehow along the way you forget that you were in the midst of telling people about how excited you are to see them. And before you can say anything you are being searched by border guards for 6 hours and trying to explain to a border guard that riding a bike naked need not be uncomfortable at all

Before you know it you see your friends from another country and the relief washes over you... then months later you realize you haven't shared that note about how great it was gonna be, so instead you have to share HOW GREAT IT WAS!

Hawt damn we are were excited! ERECTIONS AND WET SADDLES ALL OVER TORONTO!

We just Months ago that our favorite venue in Canada is was able to host us! THE SOMEWHAT UNDERGROUND VENUE, CINECYCLE! SO AWESOME!

Last time we came through it was quite a scene amazing party hosted by our friend and international bicycle playboy, Navid. Dancing and cavorting till dawn, that's the way we like it!

This Message was posted on our titillating (if not a little frustrating FaceBook page) following our first of three Canadian Turning TriXXX screenings:

Today i attended a bike smut show in Toronto. 

I was shocked to walk into the venue to find a projected display of "We want porn in Iraq." i immediality felt replused by this image comming from a political, activist and queer background. As an audience i sat in my chair and participated in the entire event vieweing awaiting for an explanation, or a sort of relation to the image of a man holding the at poster stating these words. Unfortunatley there was no refrence or dialouge invested in explaining the context of the image displayed. I found this profoundly offensive, especially since most of the bodies reflected in the "short films" were not people of color and have no connection to the language or display of such words.

 I then asked one of the organizers of the event, and she stated she has not been long on the tour and doesn't understand why it was displayed. That's applauling!!

Using people of color to display repressive sexuality is not okay. Using IRAQ as a continent torn into pieces by the united states for years in a war that is uncalled for based on false statment based on WOD is even more problematic. The middle east doesnt need rescuing by privilaged people, it doesn't need the outside world defining it's sexuality and it's take on the expression of sexuality.

As an arab queer identified person, i find it extremely problematic to showcase this image without explanation and no understanding. SHAME on you, using the suffering of Iraqi people to advance your agenda on obscenity, and shame on you for failing to put this image in context with the entire event! SHAME ON BIKE SMUT!

8:15pm PST This is particularly interesting because we recently just listened to a Savage Love podcast featuring Make Love Not Porn advocate, Cindy Gallop. She is advocating that the volume of porn is only a problem because we have no context to place it in.

Coming out as a 'Bike-Sexual'

Telling your friends and family about your bike-sexuality can be a big step for anyone to take. It may sound easy to just say 'I love bikes', but bike-sexuality is not that simple. It has many facets, and not everyone (especially non-cyclists) will understand. Giving up your car, or attending group bike rides to pick up new mates, or showing up at family gatherings with a bike rather than a new partner can seem strange to your loved ones who do not understand the wonders of bike-sexuality. So, this National Coming Out Day, Bike Smut thought it would be a good idea to look into the different types of bike-sexuality and good ways to tell your loved ones about your life choices.

First, lets go over the different types of bike-sexuality: (and remember, you can identify as one or more of the definitions below, and feel free to send us your own definition of bike-sexuality!)

The Pee-wee Herman (or Bike-nogamist):  One who is exclusively interesting in a relationship with their own bike and not other bikes or people.

The SpokesSlut: One who is interested in sexually engaging with lots of people regardless of gender or sexual orientation, but only if they use a bike as their primary form of transportation.

The 'as long as it rolls' thrill-seeker: One who is interested in getting into as many interesting and challenging saddles as possible.  Enjoys building and riding freak bikes, and most other peoples bikes.

The Conversion: One who takes up cycling only because the person they are interested in is already a bike-sexual

The Pedalphile: One who is only interested in riding kids bikes (Watch this movie from last year's Bike Smut 5: Speed program)

The Tandem: A monogamous partnership found through cycling, that continues to cycle together almost exclusively. 

After coming out to yourself as a bike-sexual, the next step can be quite difficult: Sharing your bike-sexuality with your loved ones and friends. One of the overriding fears of coming out is the fear of rejection from those we love, especially those who do not ride bikes. You may wonder if your family or friends will stop loving you and not respect your choice by pressuring you to get a car.  They may discredit your choice by saying this 'bike thing' is just a phase, or they might tell you it's dangerous or crazy. Remember to stay strong. Coming out as a bike-sexual is important because you are helping others see that transportation diversity is important and that there are other ways to get around and other ways to love. At Bike Smut, we think one of the best first steps, is to invite your loved ones on a ride.
