We are coming back home!

Well not our home exactly, Canada feels more like Cascadia than the rest of the United States, but if we are gonna have certain inaliable rights somewhere it might as well be here. Besides US citizens probably need more bikesexual liberation than just about any other people in the non-pornographer-beheading world.

Plus, Vermont might just be the closest thing to Oregon on the east coast! Sure Maine has the original Portland, but there loads of ways OR and VT stand out. Politics: lefist, laissez-faire... well these terms probably don't mean much because so many ideas have become twisted so many ways. But nonetheless Burlington is directly south of Montreal, we are going to stop, drop (some porn) and roll (out afterward).

Beth and Bike Smuts Excellent adventure: We're still rockin' in wisconsin. We're all alright. We're all alright. Yeah.

So after leaving Minneapolis  we headed to Wisconsin, the home of the cheese heads!
Our first stop was Madison where did our show at the Lothlorien Co op    on September 26th.
We got there early enough to set up, make some snacks and set up with time to spare. The show went well, and afterwards a group of ten went out for drinks at a local bar. We had a right laugh, sharing pitchers and eating fried cheese curds. Yes, for the first time ever, we ate cheese curds. I only had four of them, but I can still taste the oily goodness in my mouth and feel it festering in my tummy. The jukebox played Talking Heads and The Specials, and dancing was of course in order. A fun night turned into a comfy one as we finally made our way to our hosts houses for the evening. In the morning the view was gorgeous, as our hosts house was right on the lake.

After the goodbyes we left to go to Milwaukee. Our host worked at a local bike co op called Spoken Cycles, so we met him there, gave our bikes some love and later went over to his abode. The show took place at a local bar called the Riverwest Public House and we did two showings, one for those who did not participate in the underpants ride, and one for those who did. Overall it was a good turn out, we had a laugh or two and I became friends with the lady a the door. She was quite hilarious.

 Overall, Wisconsin was 100% pretty awesome adventure. Amazing people, fun shows and CHEESE CURDS!

Our next stop was Chicago, so we clambered back into Babs Johnson and took of for the windy city! 

Turning TriXXX in Boston

Oh how different the world can be after just 18 months.

Due to rather confusing circumstances Bike Smut will not be at the Brattle Theater in Cambridge this year. The torrent of emails ended in a shrug from the venue leaving us in scrambling to find a place that would accept this ever persecuted programming.

But luck be a micro cinema, we found something, something amazing.

We are doing THREE micro screenings all this Friday night in Jamaica Plain at a venue that holds true to some truly independent art

La vélo-sexuelle

à Lyon

Le français est la langue de l'amour. Aussi, la France accueille le monde plus grande course du vélo. (Le Tour de France, bien sûr!) Naturellement, les français sont tres vélo-sexuelles. L'année passée, Bike Smut a montré leur films en sept villes en France, ainsi que Bruxelles et Lausanne.

Nous avons eu un expérience et quelques mémorable expositions. Nos plus grands souvenirs de la tournée sont la nudité. À Paris, les personnes se pressaient pas pu entrer parce que la salle a été complet. Plutôt, les cyclistes se sont fait nu et célèbrent dans le rue. À Lyon, les cyclistes ont organisé un 'bare as you dare' Tour de la Ville où, à la terminaison, il y comprit de la champagne.

Maintenant, nous irons à Montréal, la deuxième plus grande ville où l'on parle français, pour montrer nos films. C'est pourquoi j'ai essayé écrire en français, malgré ma français tres basic. J'espère que ceux d'entre vous qui habitent à Montréal pourront venir à notre tournage.

Toronto Shame

This Message was posted on our titillating (if not a little frustrating FaceBook page) following our first of three Canadian Turning TriXXX screenings:

Today i attended a bike smut show in Toronto. 

I was shocked to walk into the venue to find a projected display of "We want porn in Iraq." i immediality felt replused by this image comming from a political, activist and queer background. As an audience i sat in my chair and participated in the entire event vieweing awaiting for an explanation, or a sort of relation to the image of a man holding the at poster stating these words. Unfortunatley there was no refrence or dialouge invested in explaining the context of the image displayed. I found this profoundly offensive, especially since most of the bodies reflected in the "short films" were not people of color and have no connection to the language or display of such words.

 I then asked one of the organizers of the event, and she stated she has not been long on the tour and doesn't understand why it was displayed. That's applauling!!

Using people of color to display repressive sexuality is not okay. Using IRAQ as a continent torn into pieces by the united states for years in a war that is uncalled for based on false statment based on WOD is even more problematic. The middle east doesnt need rescuing by privilaged people, it doesn't need the outside world defining it's sexuality and it's take on the expression of sexuality.

As an arab queer identified person, i find it extremely problematic to showcase this image without explanation and no understanding. SHAME on you, using the suffering of Iraqi people to advance your agenda on obscenity, and shame on you for failing to put this image in context with the entire event! SHAME ON BIKE SMUT! 

 

Whew! Its all a bit more than we are ready to process at the moment. What do you think?

8:15pm PST This is particularly interesting because we recently just listened to a Savage Love podcast featuring Make Love Not Porn advocate, Cindy Gallop. She is advocating that the volume of porn is only a problem because we have no context to place it in.

Going below the Avocado Belt

Did we say South of the Border the other day??


Well to clear up any confusion, we don't mean the place in just south of North Carolina with the massive glowing sombrero (although that place does rank on the international kitsch scale)

We mean Mexico! (aka Guatemala's Gay Unicorn Hat.)

Our time down south will consist of, elective surgery, excessive racial stereotyping, shitting salad bowls of guacamole, and racing techno colored dream bikes across the desert before unlocking the secrets of the Mayan temples at the conclusion of time this Winter Solstice.

"HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?!" You stammer in disbelief.  "Mexicans are almost entirely Catholic and therefore hate pornography!" 

En contrare, mon frayre... wait, no... Aye carumba, gringo! For it is in repressive cultures that Bike Smut has found it most excited fans. If you were to compare and contrast the business professional from uber-hip bike-friendly and sexually liberated streets of San Francisco with the same mild mannered person from the formerly repressive culture of Salt Lake you might wonder if SF had a pulse. Salt Lake is a bastion of Jack Mormons and other "not holey enough to get into my personal heaven" wash outs. SF killed god like 70 years ago.


 

A similar reaction occurred in parts of Europe. Where sexually liberated fetish fiends in Berlin were mildly appreciative of our attempts to liberate humanity via better sex and better transportation, all of Italy was a flame in bikesexuality!
The answer is clear. Go where there is a restrictive religious culture and find the counter culture awaiting for sweet bikesexual joy!

Coming out as a 'Bike-Sexual'

Telling your friends and family about your bike-sexuality can be a big step for anyone to take. It may sound easy to just say 'I love bikes', but bike-sexuality is not that simple. It has many facets, and not everyone (especially non-cyclists) will understand. Giving up your car, or attending group bike rides to pick up new mates, or showing up at family gatherings with a bike rather than a new partner can seem strange to your loved ones who do not understand the wonders of bike-sexuality. So, this National Coming Out Day, Bike Smut thought it would be a good idea to look into the different types of bike-sexuality and good ways to tell your loved ones about your life choices.

First, lets go over the different types of bike-sexuality: (and remember, you can identify as one or more of the definitions below, and feel free to send us your own definition of bike-sexuality!)

The Pee-wee Herman (or Bike-nogamist):  One who is exclusively interesting in a relationship with their own bike and not other bikes or people.

The SpokesSlut: One who is interested in sexually engaging with lots of people regardless of gender or sexual orientation, but only if they use a bike as their primary form of transportation.

The 'as long as it rolls' thrill-seeker: One who is interested in getting into as many interesting and challenging saddles as possible.  Enjoys building and riding freak bikes, and most other peoples bikes.

The Conversion: One who takes up cycling only because the person they are interested in is already a bike-sexual

The Pedalphile: One who is only interested in riding kids bikes (Watch this movie from last year's Bike Smut 5: Speed program)

The Tandem: A monogamous partnership found through cycling, that continues to cycle together almost exclusively. 

After coming out to yourself as a bike-sexual, the next step can be quite difficult: Sharing your bike-sexuality with your loved ones and friends. One of the overriding fears of coming out is the fear of rejection from those we love, especially those who do not ride bikes. You may wonder if your family or friends will stop loving you and not respect your choice by pressuring you to get a car.  They may discredit your choice by saying this 'bike thing' is just a phase, or they might tell you it's dangerous or crazy. Remember to stay strong. Coming out as a bike-sexual is important because you are helping others see that transportation diversity is important and that there are other ways to get around and other ways to love. At Bike Smut, we think one of the best first steps, is to invite your loved ones on a ride.
